365 Inspirations—62: Exercise

Yoon's Yoga Bliss Summer 2012 Retreat at The Yoga Lodge
"Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it."—Plato

I fell off the wagon last week with so many things to do. It's the end of the quarter at the college and I feel I'm losing my zap. Last week I didn't do yoga or walk much and I felt it. My mood is not so good when I don't exercise or don't eat well.

This morning I woke up to blinding sun. I couldn't believe it. It was so bright and sunny in my bedroom. My husband got up and made breakfast and we enjoyed eating it slowly while gazing out at the orb in the sky which was casting light on my front yard and garden giving all the flowers and trees just what they've been waiting for: sunlight!

I really wanted to be outside, but I promised myself I would go to yoga because I hadn't been for a week. I'm so glad I went. It was so nice to get my body moving again after a week hiatus. I went to an event for a friend in the afternoon and as soon as it was over, I headed to Greenlake Park for a 3-mile walk around the lake.

My husband wasn't able to come with me because it was nearly 5pm and he teaches another yoga class at 5:45pm. I think it was good for me to be on my own for the walk around the lake. I was much more able to focus on my stride and breathing by myself. I kept a steady, fast pace and felt my breath. I really tuned in to the walk itself and how invigorating it felt to be outside in the late afternoon sun. I felt my blood pumping and everything was coming to life again.

I enjoyed the scenery and really took in my surroundings.

Now I understand why I wasn't in such a good mood last week. Even though I was busy, the lack of exercise did not help my mental or physical state.

I realize now that even when I am busy, I have to keep up with exercise and really make time for it. Usually I'm pretty good about exercise.  I walk almost everyday and do yoga 2-3 times per week, but not last week.

But not to worry. I'm pulling myself up on that wagon. I'm back in the saddle again and it feels good!

Do you exercise regularly? Is your mood affected when you don't get regular exercise in?

  1. I have had periods of my life when I've exercises regularly, and I plan to do it again when my foot heals. I definitely feel better when do. I used to job regularly, and I really enjoyed it. Long ago, I swam regularly, and I had so much fun doing it!

  3. I would like to learn meditation and yoga, but I do not know where to start... I mostly take several time to rest my mind, spirit and to enlighten my thoughts... does it count? :)

Have a great week my dear friend.

    1. HI Life, where do you live? There must be a yoga center or a gym near you! I'd start there. Many gyms have yoga classes. For meditation, you could check out this website: www.dhamma.org.

They have 10-day meditation courses and I recommend it if you can get the time.

      All the best to you,
      Katherine

  4. This is something I didn't start doing until 2008 but it changed my life when I did. It not only allowed me to shed 55 pounds over the course of 4 1/2 years, but it also made me feel much healthier emotionally. Exercise is something I am definitely an advocate for.

  6. Ah! the 'real' reason to have a dog....she's my motivation to walk every day! Although we don't go if it's raining. More than exercise, I find that I need a dose of outside every day. I suffer a bit in the winter when it's harder to get out.
